THE 10 MOST COMMONLY MISPRONOUNCED ALCOHOLIC DRINKS
Jun 8, 2016
(TDB) - Some drinks are pronounced differently to the way they’re spelled, and it’s a common mistake to read them aloud as they appear on the bottle.
However, after much consideration, we are able to highlight which of these drinks are causing the punters the most trouble and put together an easy ‘how-to’ guide to ensure you no longer have any embarrassing slip ups.
10. Merlot
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Mer-Lot
How it’s actually pronounced: Mer-Loh
Merlot may be a simple word to those in the know, but wine newbies can be forgiven for their mistake. However, those who have watchedSideways will know exactly how it’s pronounced after Paul Giamatti’s exclaimed that “I will not be drinking any f****** Merlot!”
9. Boulevardier
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Boul-Va-Deer
How it’s actually pronounced: Bou-Levard-Ee-Ay
An American cocktail that admitted doesn’t get much of a run out, but if you haven’t seen one before then trying to pronounce it correctly after a few drinks could lead to a few stifled giggles from those nearby.
7. Caipirihina
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Ci-Pir-In-Ha
How it’s actually pronounced: Kai-Pee-Reen-Ya
Brazil’s national cocktail has enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent years, but that’s not stopped everyone from saying it wrong. Summer’s coming, though, so there will undoubtedly be a few more of these flying around in the coming weeks.
6. Glenfiddich
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Glen-Fiddich
How it’s actually pronounced: Glen-Fidikh
Though it’s easy (and natural) to assume that the ‘ch’ is spoken as it’s written, but alas, the Scots have tricked us with a harder sound at the end.
5. Daiquiri
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Da-Qui-Ri
How it’s actually pronounced: Da-Kih-Ree
The temptation to put emphasis on the ‘Q’ often proved to great for cocktail lovers, but no, don’t do it!
4. Cointreau
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Coin-Troh
How it’s actually pronounced: Kwan-Troh
Another name that would seem relatively simple to say but has a cheeky twist in the tail. Quite where the ‘Kwan’ comes from is anyone’s guess.
3. Mojito
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Mo-Ji-To
How it’s actually pronounced: Mo-Hi-To
Most have got the hang of this word now, but those familiar with the Spanish language will be able to tell you that ‘J’ sounds are usually softer that they’re spoken.
2. Pinot Noir
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Pee-Noi Noir
How it’s actually pronounced: Pee-noh Nwahr
Another nod to Sideways here. Pinot Noir is not the name of a 1940s detective movie, but a complex but robust grape variety that grows in selected pockets of land across the world. Like most of the other entires, keep the pronunciation soft.
1. Courvoisier
How it’s mistakenly pronounced: Cou-Voi-Sier
How it’s actually pronounced: Kur-Vwa- Syay
