(WSJ) - An almost 8,000-acre ranch in Sonoma county, the wine-growing region north of San Francisco, is on the market with an asking price of $39 million.

Named Santa Angelina, the ranch sits in the Knights Valley region, roughly a 90-minute drive from San Francisco. The property includes a historic home that dates back to the 1800s when the land was homesteaded, said Henry C. McMicking, whose family owns the ranch. Renovated, it has two bedrooms and is used as a guest house. There’s also a 3,288-square-foot, five-bedroom main home—a California-style ranch with wrap-around porches—a swimming pool and a helicopter hangar. Other improvements include a caretaker’s house, shooting range, art studio and three horse barns.

The owners are the descendants of the late Henry A. and Doris McMicking, who bought the property in 1960 as a gathering place for their family, said Mr. McMicking, one of the couple’s four children. Henry A. McMicking was a venture capitalist who, with his brother, was an early investor in audio and videotape technology.

While maintaining the property as a working cattle ranch, the family also used it as a getaway for horseback riding, hunting, hiking, swimming and fishing. The family is now selling as “each of the participants want to do something themselves,” said Mr. McMicking, age 67, a retired venture capitalist.
