Sunken Treasure Surfaces at Wine Sale
Mar 7, 2016
(Wine-Searcher) - A bottle of once-lost Champagne heads up an extraordinary auction in Paris this week.
A bottle of Champagne that lay on the seabed for more than 80 years is one of the rare treasures for sale at a French auction this week.
The bottle of 1907 Heidsieck & Co Monopole Diamant Bleu Champagne was recovered in 1998 from the wreck of the sunken Swedish freighter Jönköpping, which was torpedoed in the Gulf of Finland by a German U-boat in 1916, en route for Russia. Some 2000 bottles of various Champagnes and spirits were recovered from the wreck by divers and have been sold at various auctions since.
This bottle is from the collection of Pierre Bergé, co-founder of the Yves Saint Laurent empire, which also contains some of the world's greatest wines, although the price estimates should have collectors salivating, with 3000 bottles expected to sell between $110 and $3300 each.
As well as the Heidsieck, there is a dazzling collection of first growths for sale, including 1895 Château Lafite, jeroboams of Mouton Rothschild from the 1975 and 1978 vintages, a double magnum of the 1959 Château Haut-Brion, 1937 Château d'Yquem and a rare jeroboam of the 1921 Château Climens.
Bordeaux lovers can also choose between Saint-Émilions from Ausone and Cheval Blanc, and wines from Petrus, Léoville-Las-Cases, Montrose, and Margaux.
Vintages covered by the Bordeaux offerings include sought-after years like 1929, 1934, 1945, 1947, 1953, 1961 and 1982.
There is plenty to interest Burgundy fans, too, with a case of the 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tache and 19 bottles of 1990 Échézeaux on the block, as well as the likes of 1989 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares.
