Beer and wine coming to 5 Utah Starbucks locations
Feb 23, 2016
(KUTV) - The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control granted Starbucks the state's first limited service restaurant master license, allowing the company to serve beer and wine at five of their locations.
"I think the Starbucks experiment is a good one to see how the master license program works," said John Nielsen with the DABC.
Starbucks district manager, Lucas Wood, said adding beer and wine would, "enhance our role as a gathering place for the community into the evening."
People we spoke with in downtown Salt Lake City were in favor of the DABC's decision.
"I like the idea of a business or an establishment being able to serve the products and services that they want," said Jeff Morton. "And if Starbucks wants to sell liquor or beer or wine, I think that should be their right as a business."
Madia Hasratian also said it was a good idea.
"It'll be a nice treat. It'll be different. I think it'll be good for the city. I think it'll really help the downtown area because I think people are drawn to that a little bit. And I think we have a much more liberal crowd now."
The Senate passed the master license bill in 2013. It went into effect May 14, 2013, but was never used until now.
