Beckstoffers to acquire Dancing Hares
Feb 18, 2016
(NVR) - Tuck and Boo Beckstoffer have agreed to acquire Dancing Hares Winery and Vineyard from founders Paula Brooks and Bob Cook.
The purchase, for an undisclosed price, includes the 20-acre winery estate, with a state-of-the-art, barn-style winery, vineyards, caves, three residences, brands and inventory.
The transaction is likely to close March 1, according to Tuck Beckstoffer. Dancing Hares founders Paula Brooks and Bob Cook established the estate in 2003 and completed the winery and caves, which were designed by architect Howard Backen, in 2009.
A St. Helena real estate company had listed the property at $26.5 million for a 30-acre parcel. The Beckstoffers ended up buying 20 of those acres; they did not disclose the price they paid for that piece.
According to the listing, two separate vineyards of about 5.5 acres were designed and planted by David Abreu and are planted to cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot.
Philippe Melka has been appointed as winemaker, and the Beckstoffers will continue to work with consultants Michel Rolland and Frederick Delivert, according to a news release.
The winery currently produces two limited production estate wine blends: 750 cases of Dancing Hares red blend ($150 a bottle) and 1,500 cases of Mad Hatter Cabernet Sauvignon, which sells for $68. Both are sold predominantly via a mailing list. The winery currently has a 15,000-gallon permit, according to Beckstoffer.
“We’re proud and honored to be a part of this community and the first Beckstoffers to own an estate winery after more than 40 years as grapegrowers and stewards of the land in the Napa Valley,” said Beckstoffer. “Paula and Bob poured their heart into developing a fantastic vineyard and stunning winery. The Dancing Hares estate is a true winemaker’s dream. No effort has been spared in creating a winery where the finest wines in the world can be produced.”
The Dancing Hares estate is on the north fork of Crystal Springs Road, in the eastern hills of St. Helena at the foot of Howell Mountain. After a career as an executive and entrepreneur in a software business, Brooks is a vintner who serves on several local nonprofit boards, according to the winery’s website.
Cook spent 30 years in the computer software business as a serial entrepreneur, who is now a vintner, philanthropist and author. His third book in a series of national security thrillers, “Pulse,” was published in January and is available on Amazon.
Beckstoffer said they will continue to produce wines from the vineyard and added, “We will begin the process of determining which labels we will use for the estate fruit after harvest of 2016.”
According to a news release, the Beckstoffers will produce their two flagship wines, Semper and Mockingbird, at the Dancing Hares Winery and will offer them for tasting at the winery after the acquisition is completed.
Semper is a small production label consisting of pinot noirs and chardonnay from the Sonoma County coast. Mockingbird is Tuck Beckstoffer’s limited production blended cabernet sauvignons sourced from the finest Napa Valley vineyards. For the 2010 vintage, the Mockingbird Red is sourced from the Missouri Hopper Vineyard; the Mockingbird Green is from Las Piedras Vineyard. Both vineyards are owned by his father, Andy Beckstoffer, who owns and manages 3,600 acres of vineyards in Napa, Lake and Mendocino counties. The wines are sold only by mailing list.
Tuck Beckstoffer is president of The Seventy Five Wine Co., which is based in St. Helena and includes a variety of wines. According to its website, it is “dedicated to pioneering change by producing premium wines of great distinction at reasonable prices.” It is named after 1975, the year Tuck Beckstoffer came to the Napa Valley.
Besides Semper and Mockingbird, the portfolio of wines includes a 2013 California cabernet sauvignon at $20; the 2013 Sum, a blend of California cabernet sauvignon, petite syrah and syrah at $25; and a 2014 California sauvignon blanc at $14. It also includes a Hogwash 2014 rose at $16 and a 2012 Melee Grenache, from the Central Coast and Mendocino County for $32.50.
