Bulgaria marks Day of Vine Growers, Wine Producers

Jan 31, 2016

(Focus) - On February 1 Bulgarian people mark the Day of Vine Growers, Wine Producers, Falconers, Gardeners and Tavern-Keepers - Saint Trifon’s Day.

The day is commonly known as Trifon Zarezan because it is the day on which vines are pruned and "Zarezan" is derived from the Bulgarian verb for "prune".

In line with the Julian calendar Saint Trifon is commemorated on February 14. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church adopted the Revised Julian calendar some 50 years ago, however, and marks the feast day on February 1.
