California: Wine Country cashing in on Super Bowl 50
Jan 30, 2016
(KTVU) - It's not just San Francisco and Santa Clara cashing in on the Super Bowl. The spillover is stretching to the North Bay and to wine country.
100 miles from Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium (or 2 or so hours, depending on traffic), locals are finding a way to bridge the district.
The vines may be damp and dormant, but there's plenty to toast to at a St. Helena winery. Tasting rooms are empty, but in a sense, Freemark Abbey won the Super Bowl. The winery was selected by the NFL to make a commemorative wine in honor of the Super Bowl's 50th anniversary.
"Super Bowl fans, football fans in general, want something to commemorate one of their favorite events of the year," said Clint Smith, tasting room manager.
Blended in the Bordeaux style, the commemorative bottle is in stores at about $100 a bottle.
"Some Carolina fans came in last week and purchased about a case. So if they win, I believe they might buy some more," Smith said.
Always a destination, Napa should reap some Super Bowl benefits although most are staying closer to San Francisco and where this year's game is played in Santa Clara.
The boost comes from hotels like the Silverado Resort, which offers Super Bowl packages; room deals, wine tastings and viewing parties.
