Growth in China drives Australian wine exports to highest value in almost a decade

Jan 20, 2016

(ABC) - The value of Australian wine exports have reached their highest levels in almost 10 years.

Wine Australia figures show the value of exports rose 14 per cent to $2.1 billion in 2015.

Chief executive Andreas Clark said while the United States remained Australia's largest market, exports to China experienced the greatest growth.

"China was up 66 per cent, for a total value of $370 million of exports," he said.

"Hong Kong was up 22 per cent, up to $172 million.

"But pleasingly we've also seen a return to growth in our number one market, which is the USA, which has been pretty hard for the last few years but was up 4 per cent last year to $443 million."

China is Australia's third largest market, with Hong Kong the fifth.

The value of exports to the United Kingdom, Australia's second largest market, rose just 0.2 per cent to $376 million.

Exports to Australia's fourth largest market, Canada, rose 7 per cent to $193 million.

The increases come as growers complain about prices they receive for grapes.

"It's been a tough period of time the last 10 years for the sector," Mr Clark said.

"Growth is still patchy.

"These numbers are a really strong signal that we're on a pathway to a return to prosperity but there's still a lot of work to be done.

"A lot of shoe leather that needs to be worn out getting out into markets and selling our wine
