Napa Valley Wine Region Secures Name Protection in Israel and Turkey
Apr 12, 2012
(NVV) - The Napa Valley Vintners nonprofit trade association representing more than 525 Napa Valley wineries has added two more countries, Israel and Turkey, to its growing list of places that have agreed to respect the Napa Valley name related to the sale and production of wine.
“Preventing consumer deception by ensuring every bottle of wine that is labeled ‘Napa Valley’ contains wine made from Napa Valley grapes is one of our association’s top priorities,” commented Pat Stotesbery, chair of the NVV’s Napa Name Protection committee, NVV Board member and proprietor of Ladera Vineyards. “The Napa Valley name stands for wines of the highest quality and it is our responsibility to ensure wine lovers around the world are not fooled by bad actors seeking to profit by misrepresenting it.”
Napa Valley was the first wine region in the world to earn similar Geographic Indication (GI) status in the People’s Republic of China in 2012; the first non-European wine region to achieve GI status in the European Union in 2007; and has obtained name protection assurances from Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, New Zealand, Norway, Taiwan and Thailand.
Closer to home, the NVV was the first wine region to sponsor statewide conjunctive labeling legislation in the late 1980s and also sponsored the Napa Name Law, which went into effect in 2006, following a lengthy legal battle that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Both labeling laws help to further protect the integrity of the Napa Valley name.
