A huge bushfire is racing towards Australia's most famous wine region
Nov 25, 2015
(BI) - Two bushfires are burning out of control in South Australia this afternoon in weather conditions described as catastrophic by the Bureau of Meteorology.
One grassfire, north of Adelaide, near Roseworthy, is heading towards the famed Barossa Valley wine region.
The SA Country Fire Service said the Pinery fire as extremely dangerous and issued emergency warnings for Pinery, Owen, Hamley Bridge, Freeling, Greenock, Kapunda, Tanunda and Tarlee, Kapunda, Greenock and Nuriootpa just after 4pm, saying there is a risk to lives and property.
Residents have been warned not to flee and should take shelter in buildings and defend them.
Power has been lost to 18,000 properties in the area and the front of the bushfire is now 40km long.
Two firefighting planes, a Hercules and DC10, have been sent from NSW to help battle the blaze, which is being fanned by winds at up to 60km/h.
Some houses and cars have already been destroyed by the fire. A piggery is also believed to have burn down, killing the livestock.
The CFS said five firefighters have been injured and are in hospital with serious burns after a “burn over” – when the fire overruns a fire truck.
Another bushfire in the Polish Hill River, part of the Clare Valley wine region.
