2013 Not A Vintage Year For Port

May 5, 2015

(Wine-Searcher) - 2013 is a year for single-quinta wines but no major declarations are expected.

The leading Port houses will not be declaring 2013 as a vintage year.

Port house Fonseca, which is part of the Taylor, Fladgate Port empire, announced that it will release a 2013 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port on April 23, as is its tradition, but a Wine Searcher survey of the major Port companies revealed that few will make a major declaration for 2013, a year characterized by a very dry summer followed by a wet September.

Fonseca Guimaraens vintage ports are made in years when a Fonseca vintage is not declared.

Fonseca's chief winemaker David Guimaraens said: "There were exceptionally rich, powerful wines produced in 2013 prior to the rains of late September. The Ports made from the Fonseca estates in the first week of the harvest were outstanding, allowing us to produce a very fine Guimaraens 2013 vintage blend, full bodied and packed with dense berryfruit flavor."

Another major Port company, Symingtons, which owns the Graham's, Dow's, Warre's and Cockburn's brands, will not be making a general declaration this year, Paul Symington told Wine Searcher, although there will be vintages of Quinta do Vesuvio, Dow's Quinta do Bomfin and Senhora da Ribeira, and others.

"There will be some gems in 2013," he said, "but it's difficult to declare a vintage when it’s rained off and on throughout the harvest. There are small parcels of lovely quinta wines."
