US: Finger Lakes Report Winegrape Prices

Aug 26, 2011

N.Y.—The winegrape harvest in New York’s Finger Lakes region officially started Aug. 23, when Constellation Wines received its first loads of Aurore grapes. To date, the weather in the Finger Lakes this summer has been warm and dry, and—with the exception of a little drought stress in the northern part of the region in June and July—it has been a really good year for growers. New York requires state wineries that purchase more than 5 tons of any grape variety to publish the prices they will pay by Aug. 15 of each year. Hans Walter-Peterson, viticulture extension specialist with the Finger Lakes Grapes Program, told Wines & Vines that some of the reported prices are what wineries paid for their own fruit. Others may be contracted prices between growers and wineries.
