(Mirror) - A woman has died after falling into a vat of wine in an industrial cellar.

Police said 25-year-old Nerea Pérez, a wine specialist by profession, was watching the fermenting process when she was overcome by fumes and lost her balance.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in the Spanish village of Salas de los Barrios but could only retrieve her body, which was reportedly found by her uncle and well-known winemaker Raul Perez.

Emergency crews also had to help members of her family who were overcome by grief at hearing the news of her death.

Ms Pérez was said to be a leading political figure in the town of Ponferrada, El Bierzo.

Young Socialists in the area of Leon paid tribute to her, and expressed their shock at the tragedy, InfoBierzo reports.
